Engine Sounds

Pick the sound of any GTA V car or bring a sound pack, and Engine Sounds builds the resource with every data_file set up right.

  • META
  • REL
  • AWC
  • ZIP

In short

  1. 01

Drop the car’s resource or its vehicles.meta, or type the model and press “Add”. A sound pack (folder, ZIP, OIV, RPF) goes in the same place.

  2. 02

Tick the cars, then click a sound under “From GTA V” or “Your packs”.

  3. 03

Choose “In vehicles.meta” or “Script, no meta” and press “Download the resource”.

What you get

A ZIP with the sound resource (fxmanifest with the audio data_file lines, audioconfig, sfx and, for the script, client.lua) and, in meta mode, the edited vehicles.meta files in vehicles-meta/, with their paths.

Step by step

01Bring in the cars

Drop the car’s resource (folder or ZIP) or just its vehicles.meta on the left. Every model in the meta shows up under “Your cars”, with the sound it has now.

For a game car, or one whose meta you don’t have at hand, type the model into “Model, e.g. sultan” and press “Add”.

02Pick the sound

Click a car in the list to tick it. You can tick several, or “Select all”, and give them the same sound in one click.

The “From GTA V” tab has the sounds of every vehicle in the game. Search by name, make or model (for example “Zentorno” or “Pegassi”) or pick a class, then click the card. The chosen sound shows next to the car; the X removes it.

03Bring in a sound pack, if you have one

Drop the pack in the same area on the left: the folder with audioconfig and sfx, a ZIP, an OIV or a dlc.rpf. We read the data in dat151.rel and find the sound names ourselves; you see them under “Your packs”.

If a sound shows as a 0x… code, its name isn’t written anywhere in the pack. Type it in the field (usually the .awc file name without _npc) and press “Check”: we accept it only if it matches exactly.

04Choose how the sound reaches the game and download

“In vehicles.meta” writes audioNameHash into the car’s meta, the way any addon does it. You get the edited meta in the ZIP’s vehicles-meta folder, with the same path, and put it in place of the old one.

“Script, no meta” adds a client.lua to the resource that gives the chosen models their sound when they appear near the player. It is the way to go for game cars, where you have no meta to change.

If you added a pack, tick “I have the right to use these sounds on my server.”, then press “Download the resource”. The export costs 10 credits.

Questions

I set the sound but the car sounds the same. Why?

Usually the sound resource starts after the car. Move it higher in server.cfg, restart the server and clear the test client’s cache. With a pack, also check that the chosen name is exactly the one under “Your packs”.

What does a sound shown as `0x…` mean?

The pack defines the sound only by hash, with no written name. The name is usually the .awc file’s. Type it and press “Check”; if it doesn’t match, the button stays disabled.

Can I listen to a sound before I pick it?

Not in the browser: the game’s engine sounds are granular and the game’s audio engine builds them from revs and load. The cards name the car the sound comes from, so you can recognise it.

Does “Script, no meta” load the server?

The script runs on the player, once a second, and only looks at the vehicles around them. It sets the sound once on each car.
